LaPorte kicks off Winter Fest with Ice Sculpture display

Posted: Updated:

LaPorte is celebrating their icy weather this week with their annual Winter Fest.  On Friday, artists worked on dozens of ice sculptures in the city's downtown.  The sculptures lined the streets outside local shops, and were actually sponsored by local businesses and organizations.

"Enjoy the downtown. Shop local businesses," President of the LaPorte Chamber of Commerce Michael Seitz said. "That's what we want from the downtown ice sculptures."

Seitz hoped the cold temperatures would not keep people from seeing the attractions. He added that he and the LaPorte Mayor, Blair Milo, enjoyed a laugh about how long the ice sculptures would be available for viewing.

"The sculptures will probably be here until May," Seitz said.

Sculptures were worked out in front of local stores along Lincoln Way, State Street and Jefferson Avenue.  Teresa Hadden was one of the sculptors and also the only woman carving Friday evening.

"I hope they [visitors] enjoy the artwork and the fun personalities of all the carvers and just have a really good time and enjoy the lovely town of LaPorte."

WinterFest continues throughout the week, featuring fitness activities, carriage rides, an ice fishing derby and much more.  The festival wraps up Saturday, February 1 with the Ice Fishing Derby.
