Man Recovering From Tree Limb Falling On Him

Posted:

Rich Borkholder is at the Memorial Hospital in South Bend after a tree limb fell on him causing serious injuries. On the morning of January 18th, he and a friend were cutting trees for firewood when a limb fell on him. The accident happened between County Road 142 and County Road 19 in New Paris.

Borkholder was airlifted to the hospital where he spent six hours in surgery. He broke several ribs which required smaller procedures. He fractured vertebra that pushed against his spinal cord.

"[I} was terrified and scared and didn't know what exactly to do," Kyle Borkholder, son of Rich, said after he received the news about his father. "I drove from Fort Wayne to South Bend as fast as I could to get to the emergency room.

"I just wanted to get there," Caryn Webster, stepdaughter of Rich, said. "I was about a mile away. I just wanted to get to the woods to help him."

On Tuesday he was moved from the Intensive Care Unit to the neurological floor. Then on Friday he was moved to the rehabilitation floor where he will be for long term rehab.

"In my opinion, right now, my dad is doing miraculously," Chris Webster, stepson of Rich, said. "Everyday is positive, his spirits are high, he's strong and we're just hoping for the best."

"He's getting more feeling in his legs everyday," Jason Borkholder, son of Rich, said. "We're remaining hopeful and taking it day by day."

All of the children shared that their father had a positive outlook and is determined to walk again. Until then, Rich Borkholder will continue his rehabilitation.

"We're doing fundraising for dad," Jason Borkholder said. "It's going to be a lot of high expensive medical bills plus cost of living that we're trying to help them out with to alleviate the burden."

His children have started a web site to help raise money for their father. They are accepted donations as well as selling T-shirts. They have raised over 2,000 dollars and sold 20 T-shirts. Their goal is to sell 100. To help, visit www.teamrich.us
