Starke County opens warming 24 hour warming center

IU Health LaPorte and Starke hospitals have opened as warming stations for people who need relief from the bitter cold temperatures.

Community members only need to visit the main lobby of the hospitals and sign in.  There are comfortable chairs and a television to watch.

The hospital cafeteria is open from 6:00am - 8:00pm.

Interim Administrator at Indiana University Health Starke Hospital, Craig Felty says it is extremely important to have a place where people can come to get warm.  "As we progress through this dangerous situation with the wind chills and the snow," Felty said, "we always want to be able to give and there are not a lot of 24 hour operation open in Starke County where residents can go just to sit and be safe."

The warming center will be operational 24 hours a day, while the temperatures are so cold.  People visiting the center are asked to bring their own personal care items and medication that they might need.
