Who can drive during a travel warning?

Much of Michiana is currently under either a travel watch or a travel warning.  Meaning you should stay off the roads.  In some places if travel isn't "essential" you could be fined up to $2,500.

According to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security during a "watch" the only travel that's recommended is to and from work and for emergency situations.  Under a travel "warning," only emergency management workers and road crews are supposed to be on the road.

President of the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners, Andrew Kostielney, said they put travel restrictions in place to protect you.  "With it getting colder there's very few things we can do to the roads to keep them from being slick."

So who can be driving right now without being fined?  Kostielney said, "the ordinance states that only emergency personnel are allowed out on the roads."

But he said there is a little leeway.  "If you've got a sick child or you work in a nursing facility, something like that, if you've got a good reason to be out."

So what if you're not a doctor or a first responder and your boss is still telling you to get to work.  Will you get a ticket?  Kostielney said, "it's gonna be up to the discretion of the officer but chances are you're not gonna get a ticket.."

You can check if your County is under a travel warning at the Indiana Department of Homeland Security's website.
