How to avoid frozen pipes in frigid weather

Experts say this has been worst year for frozen pipes in 20 years.

Gary Eby of Eby Plumbing says they've been incredibly busy. At times, day and night since the last cold snap.

Pipes break when they freeze, and they are seeing a lot of that. Frozen pipes in homes and frozen pipes in strip malls where there's one vacant storefront in the middle that owners wouldn't normally heat.

The repairs can quickly become costly.

So here's what you should keep in mind: "Insulate the pipes with pipe insulation and try to have heat in the area they are at," says Eby.

Eby says heat tape helps as well as keeping a pencil stream of water going through the pipes.
