South Bend parents and teachers react to making up snow days

South Bend Schools have had quite their share of snow days this year, seven to be exact. And now, the district is left figuring out when they're going to make up these days. Superintendent of South Bend Schools Dr. Carole Schmidt says last year, the district didn't use ANY of their snow days.

"We really have 3 days that we have to make up," she explains, the state waived 2 of the 7 snow days, and 2 emergency snow days were built into the calendar year. So the district has a decision to make, how will they make up the three missed days?

"We will make that decision in collaboration with staff and principals, and unions and so on. We haven't made that decision yet," says Dr. Schmidt.

So with South Bend schools having to make up 3 days, as of right now, I caught up with some parents at the Kroc Center to find out if their end of the school year plans could be affected. One mother I met, Kim Ornat, has a son not in the South Bend schools, but with a similar situation. Her son has had seven snow days, and the school has to make up three as well. As far as her end of the year plans, she says, "We do have a family vacation planned, but at this time, thank goodness, we haven't started making reservations yet." But Ornat says a lot of her friends have already booked their summer get-aways, saying a lot of people she's seen, friends on Facebook, who have reservations at Disney and have to be out by the second week of June. She says a lot of her friends will be affected.

Kelly Carson is not only a mother, but a teacher at Marshall Intermediate Center. She says, "Makeup those days later in June rather than having them out on the roads." She says in the past, the district has made up snow days during the year on holidays like President's Day, but they've also extended the school year. Carson says she usually plans her summer vacation in July instead of June to be safe. "It's not worth the risk for my students to be standing in the freezing cold and get sick, and then people are missing days. I'd rather make them up at the end of the year or where we can fit them in," says Carson.

Dr. Schmidt says hopefully, the weather will cooperate from here on out, and that dreaded snow day number will stay at three.
