Schools on lockdown during hunt for escaped inmate

Schools in the Shipshewana area were on lockdown for part of the afternoon while officers searched for an escaped inmate

Michael Elliot escaped from a Michigan prison Sunday night.  He took a woman hostage in her car and drove to Indiana.  The woman was able to get help when they stopped at a gas station but Elliot took off in the woman's jeep Cherokee.  The vehicle was found in Shipshewana Monday prompting local schools to go on lockdown.

We spoke with Thad Hart, a teacher at Shipshewana-Scott Elementary School.  He said the school went into lockdown around one in the afternoon.  He also told us when they dismissed the students, they did it one bus at a time, out of just one door, to keep everything under control.  "It's sort of surreal right now.  We had the kids a few extra minutes so had to pull out some of the tricks.  We didn't tell the students what was going on we just said we were practicing a different way to go home tonight.  A little stressful but we'll be fine."

Hart said they also had a big police presence at the school to make sure every student got home safely.
