US-33 reopens following home fire in Goshen

Posted:

A fire broke out at a home off of US-33 and Franklin Street in Goshen Tuesday morning.  US-33 had been closed while crews were working the scene, but reopened Tuesday afternoon.

The Benton Township Fire Department received a call from a neighbor after they saw smoke coming out of a window of the home. No one was inside at the time. Neighbors say the family that lives in the home were at work, and their children at school. Crews did rescue two rabbits from the home.

Crews say the fire broke out in the kitchen of the home. They were able to contain it to just that section of the house. Benton Township Fire Chief Jason Dunlap says the kitchen was completely trashed from the blaze.

Benton Fire Department called three other departments, Syracuse Fire Department, Clinton Fire Department, and New Paris Fire Department, to help battle the fire.

Chief Dunlap says with these weather conditions, crews were worried they were going to be faced with frozen fire hydrants. Luckily, crews didn't encounter any.

Chief Dunlap says the weather still played a factor in the fight. "It makes everything a lot harder. You have lines that get frozen up or your connections when you're trying to get water. Everything starts freezing, it really slows the process down. And travel times for other departments, it takes them a lot longer to get here, too."

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
