INDOT ready for next wave of winter weather

The snow in Michiana seems relentless this year, and even more is heading our way.  The Indiana Department of Transportation says, though they are dealing with some larger challenges this year, they are ready to keep the roads safe.

"One of the big challenges we have is our crews have been on the roads nearly 24 hours a day for four or five weeks now," says Matt Deitchley with INDOT.  "They're working 12 hour alternating schedules to make sure they can get out there."

It's not just the drivers working extra hours.  Deitchley says dispatchers and mechanics are working over time, too.

Even when the snow stops, crews are out on the roads.  Either they are pre-treating with a salt brine mixture to keep down the snow build-up on the next storm, or they're filling potholes created from the last one.

All this work means INDOT is spending a lot more on winter maintenance than usual, but that isn't as big a problem as you might think.  Deitchley says they can find ways to trim in later months to make up for the extra money spent now.

"There's no concern of running out of salt.  There's no concern about not filling potholes or plowing roads."  Deitchley says.  "Everything that needs to be done will be done."
