Fire crews battle harsh conditions in freezing temps

Fire crews battled harsh conditions Thursday morning while at a deadly fire in Three Oaks.  Freezing temps coupled with the intense heat left fire fighters scrambling.

Assistant Chief Mike Young said in order to keep lines from freezing they had to keep the water running.

Crews also dealt with wet gloves.  They had to change them often to avoid frostbite.  Ambulances were brought to the scene for first responders in case of emergency and to keep them warm.

Ed Lijewski with the New Buffalo Township Fire Department said, "It's horrible. As you can see, most of the time in these severe conditions, the ice. The water turns to ice. The hoses have to continue to run. Fatigue sets in because everything starts to weigh more."

No fire fighters were hurt during the fire.  The American Red Cross was on the scene to offer assistance.
