A Leesburg man is behind bars after police say he led an officer on a pursuit near the community of Oswego.

The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department says it started after a report of a man in a van not paying for approximately $40 in gas from a Leesburg gas station around 8:30 Friday morning.

Minutes later, an off-duty Winona Lake officer says he spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect van on Armstrong Road, about 2 miles east of Leesburg. The Sheriff's Department says the officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but it the driver fled, eventually ending up on Warsaw/Oswego Road.

As the officer approached the intersection of Warsaw/Oswego Road and County Road 250 East, he says the suspect vehicle had turned around and was heading directly toward him. Police say the officer stopped the vehicle, then held the driver at gunpoint after the officer says the driver reached for what appeared to be a handgun. Police say the driver dropped the weapon, which was later determined to be a pellet gun.

Police say the driver, 25-year-old Brandon Alfano, was arrested on preliminary charges of Fleeing Law Enforcement, Operating a Motor Vehicle While Determined to be a Habitual Traffic Violator. Alfano is also facing a charge of Possession of Methamphetamine after police say officers found the drug.
