Get a call about missing jury duty? Call police

Posted:

Have you received a phone call saying you've missed jury duty and you need to pay a fine? If so, court officials say you should call police.

Several Indiana trial courts have alerted the Division of State Court Administration and Indiana Judicial Center about the possible scam involving fake jury duty phone calls.

During the call, people are reportedly told they missed jury duty and will be offered ways to resolve the situation by appearing in court or providing financial information to pay a fine.

In Indiana, initial contact with potential jurors is made through the mail. If a person fails to appear for duty, a judge can send the sheriff to compel a person to attend. The judge can also hold a person in contempt and require them to pay a fine, but none of this happens over the phone. Courts say they will never ask for specific bank account numbers, credit card information or PIN numbers.

So far, the courts are not aware of anyone in Indiana who has been harmed by revealing personal financial information.

Similar calls have been reported around the country over the past several years. Snopes.com, a well-known site that works to debunk internet and urban myths, says emails about calls have been circulating since at least 2005. Federal court officials have produced a video warning of the scam.
