UPDATE: RV Facility shuts down without notice, lays off workers

Posted: Updated:

Nearly a hundred people in Elkhart are out of work without notice.  Allied Specialty Vehicles shut down its Monaco RV Towable facility off State Road 19 on Monday.

The company says about 85 permanent employees were working at the plant at the time of its shutdown.

Employees tell FOX28 when they arrived at work Monday morning, they were greeted by two security guards.  The guards informed them that the facility had been shut down and then handed them some paperwork.

A now-former employee with the company told FOX28 that he was "blindsided" by the closure.  "Nobody saw this coming," said the man who wished to remain anonymous.

The letter states that "Allied Specialty Vehicles has made the decision to exit the RV Towable Market."  Employees say that they were stunned at the news and that there was no notice or no indication that the company was going to make this move.

Employees have been told they will receive a check for 60 days of pay as severance on February 28th and they will be able to keep their insurance through April 10.

FOX28 spoke to Dave Marshall, who was referred to by Allied Specialty Vehicles as the media contact; however, he works strictly for the ambulance sector, not the recreational vehicles department. He does tell us that he was unaware of the closing also. He tells FOX28 the bus division of the company that was in Elkhart recently moved its hub to Florida in October, and the company moved much of its RV division to Decatur, Indiana.

A call was made to Peter Giles who is the President of Allied Specialty Vehicles. So far, it has not been returned.
