Sullivan siblings make winning at St. Joe a family affair

If you check South Bend St. Joseph's basketball roster, you might wonder if Daly and Greenan Sullivan are related, since they both wear the same number.

Once you see their red hair it is obvious,  these two are brother and sister.

"If you don't know us, you might think we're twins or something, but yeah we're the only ones in our family with red hair," said St. Joe junior point guard Greenan Sullivan.

No, they are not twins, but they do have a lot in common. For instance, they are both the starting point guards for the Indians boys and girls basketball teams.

"We spend a lot of time on [basketball]," said Daly. "We're always practicing. Our whole family plays basketball and we love it."

Considering they are both students of the game, both siblings have something they admire about each other's games.

"[Daly] is pretty poised and composed," said Greenan. "Mentally she doesn't get frustrated much."

For younger sister Daly, her brother's tenacity is something she tries to work into her own game.

"[Greenan] puts so much work in and he gives everything out on the floor," said Daly.

Greenan, who is a junior, has been in his starting role for the last couple of years. When Daly got the word she would be in the starting line-up as a freshman, Greenan was in her ear with some advice.

"I told her just not to be afraid," said Greenan. "I thought my freshman year I was a little afraid. You know that big varsity scene you play a bit timid and don't show all the things you can do."

The two siblings are close, but just like any brother and sister, they don't always see eye to eye.

The nice thing is they can settle any differences on the basketball court.

"I don't let her win," said Greenan. "I go extremely hard just like I was playing any good team. The harder I go, the better she gets."

In the next few weeks, they will be playing for much more than bragging rights at the Sullivan dinner table.

The siblings are hoping to win sectional titles for the St. Joe boys and girls basketball teams.

"It would mean a lot and just mean that all our hard work has paid off in the long run," said Daly.

Daly and the St. Joe girls start their sectional games Tuesday night. Greenan's team is still playing regular season games. The St. Joe boys play at New Prairie Tuesday night.
