South Bend Common Council approves new sewer rates

South Bend residents will be seeing an increase in their sewer rate.

The South Bend Common Council voted 7 to 1 in favor of a 5% hike.

The Public Works Department was trying for a 9% increase, but after on-going discussions, they brought it down to 5%.

The increased rates will go through 2016.

The Department of Public Works said they need the additional funds to help pay for an ongoing $667 million sewer project to help them comply with the Federal Clean Water Act.

The improvements will reduce the flow of raw sewage into the river and basements during heavy rain and snow.
