South Bend's unemployment rate drops more than 20%

There is some promising news for the city of South Bend.

According to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development, the unemployment rate dropped more than 20% last year.  It went from 11% to 8.7%.

Executive Director of Community Investment Scott Ford said more than a thousand people found jobs in 2013.  He believes there's a renewed confidence in the economy, and therefore businesses are expanding their operations.

Ford said the Department of Community Investment had a hand in one of every three jobs created in the city last year. "Going forward, we're hoping to be a little more intentional and target specific industries, but we're thrilled at the progress that's been made to improve the ease of doing business in South Bend," said Ford.

In a statement that was released Tuesday, Mayor Pete Buttigieg added these job numbers are "a testament to the work of the business owners and entrepreneurs who have invested in South Bend's comeback."
