Early morning mobile home fire leaves one dead in Benton Harbor

Despite the best efforts of his neighbors, one man is dead after an early morning fire broke out in a mobile home lot in Benton Harbor.

Robert James, 73, was killed when his residence on lot No. 64 of the 1200 block of E. Empire ignited shortly before 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning. By the time the first people nearby noticed the fire, it had completely engulfed James' mobile home in flames. His neighbors attempted to rescue James, but were quickly overcome with smoke and could not help him escape his rear bedroom.

Crews from the Benton Township Fire Dept. arrived and battled the blaze until 2:30 a.m.

The fire is now extinguished and the Fire Marshal is on scene conducting a formal investigation of the cause.

FOX 28 will provide more information when it becomes available.
