Elkhart Police Department warn of scam using spoofed numbers

Elkhart Police want you to know about a scam that is going around the area.  Police say a woman was called from a scammer claiming to be from the IRS.  The scammer said she owed the IRS thousands of dollars and she could go to jail if she didn't pay.

Afterwards, she got a call from a scammer claiming to be with the Elkhart Police Department.  Her caller ID even showed "295-7070," which is a department number.  The caller said police were coming to arrest her because she didn't send in her owed back taxes.

Police warn any phone number can be 'spoofed' by scammers so it shows up in your caller ID.  Also, if you are going to be arrested, police will not call you in advance.

If you get a call like this, call your local police department immediately, and do not send any money.
