Group attempts to put piece of South Bend history on the map

A collaborative effort is underway to put the Studebaker complex in the National Register of Historic Places.

It used to sit on 120-acres and included hundreds of buildings. Now, only four remain along with two railroad stations.

Entrepreneur Kevin Smith owns part of those properties. He has a multi-million dollar restoration project planned, turning them into a data and technology center.

"We now are in a position to create a district, an historic district, that will salvage the balance of the buildings," he says. "So, people much beyond me - the next generations - will be able to understand what it was like to be here in the 1930's."

The Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend and Saint Joseph County must approve the nomination before it moves on to the state and federal levels.
