A Winamac Police officer who was on routine patrol Thursday evening is being credited with saving a woman from a burning vehicle.

The Pulaski County Sheriff's Department says Officer Mark Hoffman was southbound on US 35 around 11:55 Thursday evening when he reported spotting a fire in the area of CR 50 E. When he got closer, he found a Jeep on fire with someone inside.

After calling the fire in and requesting medics, police say Officer Hoffman tried to get the driver out through the driver's side, but couldn't get in due to the fire. Police say he was able to pull the unconscious woman out from the passenger side.

The driver, 47-year-old Tracy Redelman of Winamac, was taken to the hospital, but didn't complain of any injuries.

The incident is still under investigation. A Pulaski County Deputy investigating the case says if it were not for Officer Hoffman's action, the driver would not be alive.
