UPDATE: South Bend garbage pickup slowed by snow

Posted:

The South Bend Public Works Department has taken a hit from the weather, just like schools and businesses that have had to close. The snow has led to their garbage trucks getting stuck in alleys.

"Once you get buried in the snow, you're done," South Bend Solid Waste Division employee Franklin Fielder said. "If you look my truck is stuck and now I have to call backup."

"It may take an hour just to get a truck unstuck so it's a lot of dead time then," South Bend Director of Public Works Eric Horvath said.

The city says they have to call in front loaders to help get the trucks out of the alley. This has delayed trash pickup significantly. As a result, there are extra crews working Monday through Friday until they are caught up. Horvath says this is an issue given that 40 percent of the trash pickups are in alleys.

"We don't typically plow alleys but we've had such a bad winter and so much snow that we haven't had any melt so we just had to get in the alleys and get the snow out," Horvath said. The alleys have been plowed but Fielder says that the weight of the 40,000 pound trucks works against the drivers. "Once the truck gets in the alley it just sinks down in the snow," Fielder said.

Horvath stresses that the crews are working as best they can to pickup trash and are asking for some patience during the effort.  However, residents can call 311 to make sure their garbage is picked up.

"We're going to do whatever we have to, to make sure we have everyone picked up and we stay on top of it," Horvath said. "We appreciate their patience."
