Community works to create "Sarah Strong" Foundation

Posted:

The Elkhart community came together to raise money for Sarah Crane, an Elkhart Memorial student who passed away in December after her fight with colon cancer.

Saturday afternoon a fundraiser was held to raise money for her family's medical expenses.

Items were auctioned off, baked good were for sale and there was an opportunity to sign up for a run that proceeds would go to the "Sarah Strong" cause.

Jennifer Rogers is the General Manager of Diamond Air Inc. She asked her company to help hold this fundraiser. "I lost my husband to colon cancer so it kind of touched a nerve and my son the way he felt about everything, he's big hearted, so we all decided that we wanted to do something and give back," says Rogers.

The 5K run will be held on March 8th.

About $6 thousand has been raised so far with over 350 runners signed up. You can also sign up to be a virtual runner. People across 26 states are participating.

The Crane family and others involved in Sarah Strong are working to buy a building and create the Sarah Strong Foundation.

"The future of the foundation is what Sarah had wanted. She had always said there's a million people asking me questions constantly  and the same questions most of the time but no one's asked you guys questions and she meant her family," says Sarah Strong Treasurer Brenda Mueller.

The Foundation looks to help the family and others in Sarah's situation.
Mueller hopes to have a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Sarah Strong building by June.
