Boy celebrates birthday at Pet Refuge

Posted:

Pet Refuge in South Bend was the site of a birthday party Sunday afternoon. Eight-year-old Alex Brown chose the location to celebrate his birthday. "I like animals and I think they're really cute," he said.

He and his mother were driving to school one day when he brought up the idea of where he wanted his birthday party.  "Alex said 'I really want to have my birthday party at Pet Refuge' and I asked him a couple of questions about it," Alex's mother Rhonda Blanchard said. Rhonda contacted Pet Refuge volunteer Jami Vandenbossche about hosting the party there.

Once the location was decided, Alex made things a bit more interesting.  "He said he had enough toys and didn't need any," Rhonda said. Alex asked that his guests bring treats and toys for the cats and dogs at the Pet Refuge. "[I] thought about how many toys I already have and really don't need any more toys," Alex said.

Alex's mother has two dogs and a cat at her house and his father has two dogs at his. He wanted to give back to the animals he likes so much. "I wanted to help animal Pet Refuge help their animals," says Alex.

The request to ask for gifts for the animals and not for him didn't come as a surprise to Rhonda. "He's got such a giving heart. We've known this for a long time and today just proves that," she said.

Jami Vandenbossche had nothing but great things to say about Alex and his selfless act.  "It's fabulous that the kids put the animals' needs before their own," she said.

The birthday party included a tour of the Pet Refuge facility where the children and their families could see the cats and dogs. Everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to Alex before cutting his dog-themed cake.  This was the first birthday party held at Pet Refuge. Volunteers say they hope to host more and are offering three packages for anyone interested.
