Elkhart walkers raise awareness for Elkhart schools

Dozens of people gathered in Elkhart to show support of a May referendum that would provide money for improvements in Elkhart Schools.  People walked two miles, beginning at Monger Elementary School, to Elkhart Central High School to show the distance some students are required to walk to school every day.  If the referendum is approved by voters, the funding would enable the Elkhart School Corporation to buy more buses. This would allow more students to be picked up, keeping them from having to walk so far.

Marketing Member for the Yes 4 Elkhart Coalition Tanzie Nielsen says it is important for people to understand how important the referendum is.  "We have kids in our district that are walking two miles to get to school in weather like this," Nielsen said, "that is a lot to ask of our kids.  School is hard enough as it is, so trying to get there shouldn't be as hard."
