Judge grants additional time for charges in missing baby case

A judge has granted prosecutors additional time to review potential charges against the mother of a missing child found safe Sunday.

South Bend Police say Heather Gipperich told them she took her 8-month-old baby, Bethany, with her to buy and use heroin on February 11.  Gipperich said, while getting high, she put her baby in the care of a woman named Amanda she had first met that night.  She told police she had been in contact with the woman on a daily basis.

Elkhart Police were able to find Amanda on Sunday and place the baby in the custody of Child Services.

In a release, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office announced possible charges of Neglect of a Dependent and Taking a Child to a Nuisance. The release says the 72 hour extension granted Tuesday is needed to review reports and the law before making a decision on whether there is sufficient evidence to prove the alleged offenses beyond a reasonable doubt.

Gipperich is being held on $10,000 bond and has been ordered not to have contact with her daughter.  A hearing in the case is scheduled for Friday.
