State rejects PHM request for additional snow day waivers

The Indiana Department of Education has rejected a request for waivers from Penn-Harris-Madison Schools for two additional snow days.

Like many districts in our area, PHM administrators are trying to figure out what to do about all the days they've missed due to weather this year.

PHM spokeswoman Teresa Carroll tells FOX28 they'll be meeting to determine what they'll do about the rejection by the end of the week.

Last week, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz announced several options for how schools can make up missed times. Schools can request waivers by adding time to the school day. An additional five hours for grades 1-6 and six hours for grades 7-12 would make schools eligible for a waiver.

Schools do not need waivers if they make up days by rescheduling holidays or professional development days, add days to the end of the year, or host school on Saturdays.
