Fire crews need help digging out important resource

After you're all done shoveling, the fire department is asking you for a favor. It needs your help shoveling around one more thing, your fire hydrant.

Crews say with the huge piles of snow covering fire hydrants, it slows down response time.

Battalion Chief Dave Maenhout says if a fire hydrant can't be located, crews could potentially have to travel at least two blocks to locate another.

"People mow around them all summer long," he says. "People plant flowers around them so they know exactly where the hydrants are and it's a lot easier for them to find them. We've gone out where hydrants are supposed to be and we can't find them because they're buried so deep. Residents usually know exactly where they're at."

Snow-buried hydrants aren't the only problem that fire crews face in the winter. In the past, South Bend firefighters have also had to deal with frozen fire hydrants. However, they told us that fortunately they haven't had that problem this year.
