Minimum wage debate becomes hot topic in Elkhart

People right here in Michiana are getting in on the minimum wage debate.

On Tuesday night, the Community Forum for Economic Development held a discussion in Elkhart.

One of the speakers, Latasha Bosse, works with the case management program. She says her goal is to help low-income families move toward financial self-sufficiency.

"One of the barriers that they experience is not earning enough, even though they're working," she says. "They still qualify for a lot of government subsidized programs, and they would much rather provide for themselves without assistance."

The Federal Minimum Wage was established back in 1938 under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Since then, it has been raised many times, most recently in 2009.
