Hit and run suspect in custody after police chase

A Leonnidas man is in custody after Sturgis police say he was involved in a hit and run accident and a police chase.  The crash happened around 10:30 Wednesday morning at the intersection of Lafayette and Center St.

An officer with the Sturgis Police Department in an unmarked car tried to chase the green 1998 Dodge truck.  The chase got up to 70mph, and involved a marked police car and the use of stop sticks. Police say the suspect was able to avoid the stop sticks.

The chase ended after police say the suspect vehicle got boxed in at Lakeview and Robin Hood Trail and crashed into a snow bank.

Authorities say the unidentified 39-year-old white male was a fugitive from a parole violation connected to a Meth possession charge.  He is now facing charges of fleeing/eluding a police officer and hit and run.  He is currently being held in the St. Joseph County Jail awaiting arraignment.
