UPDATE: Lightning strike ignites Thursday morning fire in South Bend

A lightning strike ignited a small fire on the southwest side of South Bend Thursday morning. St. Joseph County dispatchers received the call shortly after 8:00am and crews from seven different departments provided aid at the scene on the 25000 block of State Road 23.

However, while initial reports from dispatchers indicated two houses on fire, crews found two small fires that were easily put out without any injuries reported. A shed behind a house was reportedly struck by lightning and ignited, and a separate small fire of unknown cause near a gas meter across the street was also identified.

Both fires were quickly extinguished and crews were exiting the scene by 9:00 am.
