Support pours in for Knox girl who died from cancer

Posted:

It's a day of mourning in Starke County as 10-year-old Korie Howard lost her battle with cancer early Thursday morning. She was a fourth grade student at Knox Elementary school and played softball.

The support for Korie has grown beyond the town of Knox. Support has come in from Plymouth, North Judson, Argos, Winamac, Culver, Bourbon and Richester. The "Korie Howard's Fan Club Fight Like a Girl Korie" was created to post pictures and messages about Korie, and it has more than 11,000 members.

Winamac resident Jennifer Beal lives one town over and is an example of how many people followed and were inspired by Korie's fight. "Other towns that are small are all getting in together," Beal said. "I mean on the store windows, they took the window paint and painted 'Stay Strong Korie,' and it was really touching." There was also a showing of support set for 6:00PM Thursday where people were asked to turn on their lights in honor of Korie.

Another example of how far Korie's story of inspiration has reached comes from Walkerton. Samantha Mcguigan has seen cancer take the lives of some of her family members. She has lost her aunt and cousin to the disease. Chemotherapy often results in the person losing their hair, and that happened in Mcguigan's relative's case as well. She was so moved by the ‘Fight Like a Girl Korie" campaign that she decided to cut her hair in order to raise money. She says that Korie's situation was different from her previous experiences.

"For some reason even though they we're family, it didn't come close to meaning as much to me as much as it actually did for Korie and I've never even met her," Mcguigan said.

A viewing will be held on Saturday February 22 from 2:00-6:00PM. A service will be held on Sunday February 23 at 11:00AM. Both will take place at the Knox Community High School. Korie Howard will be laid to rest on Sunday at the Fletcher Cemetery in Hamlet.
