Escaped Michigan convict to remain in Indiana for now

The Michigan convict who escaped and fled into Indiana earlier this month will remain in Indiana for the time being following an extradition hearing

Michael Elliot was being held in an Ionia County prison when he escaped, reportedly kidnapped a woman and stole her, fled into Indiana, and stole several other vehicles before being captured in LaPorte County.

Elliot is being charged with escape, kidnapping and carjacking, according to the Ionia County District Court.  He is being held in LaPorte County on an auto theft charge.

Elliot's identity will have to be proven before he can be released to Michigan.  The hearing had been postponed until an official letter from Michigan Governor Snyder was sent to Indiana Governor Pence requesting the extradition.  The letter has been sent, and Pence has agreed.

During the hearing, Elliot apologized for the kidnapping, and also reiterated that he was innocent of the murders he was convicted for in the first place.

We'll have an update on the hearing this afternoon on and tonight on FOX28 News at 10.
