Michiana drivers say road conditions are terrible

Some of the things people across Michiana are dealing with as the temperatures go up and down are terrible driving conditions.

Potholes are one of the biggest concerns. FOX28 took a trip around the area Friday to find where some the worst potholes are. One of the worst stretches we found was along Meijer Drive on the south side of Mishawaka. Drivers are either going through the rough patches slowly, or completely going around them to avoid them. This has proven to cause problems for drivers in the opposite direction.

Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore issued a release Friday urging motorists to be mindful of potholes. He says the Street Department crews haven't been able to do any patchwork because of the wet and freezing conditions. He says crews will be out for pothole repair when the weather conditions get better.

St. Joseph County Engineer Jessica Clark says county crews are working extended hours to fill the potholes, but warns it will take time to fill all the current and newly formed potholes. The county is asking drivers be cautious and alert to help spot potholes and slow down prior to getting to a rough area. Crews are also working to put up rough road signs to warn drivers.

Water is also proving to be a problem for drivers. St. Joseph County says two roads in the county are closed due to high water.  Elm Road between Madison Road and New Road, and Kenilworth Road between Tyler Road and Shively Road are the closed roads. The county says there is the potential for more closures as snow continues to melt.

Another headache drivers are dealing with are water trenches. Sean Clem says the ride to work everyday has been getting rougher as the temperatures go up and down. He says, "Well this morning, it was trenches of water. There's a lot of spots you can't even get through out in the country. But the potholes, I would say you're mainly dealing with potholes in the city.
