SBCSC discusses more than $25 million funding issue

The South Bend Community School Corporation is feeling some financial restraints.

During a meeting Monday night, officials expressed concerns over the capital improvement budget. It funds all building maintenance and improvements.

Due to a decline in property tax collection in recent years, the capital budget has been drained more than $10 million dollars. Combine that with a more than $10 million dollar loss to transportation, and you're looking at a more than $25 million dollars funding issue.

Nonetheless, there are a few options that can help limit the blow.

"There's the opportunity for legislative action," says Executive Director of Operational Services Robert Orlowski, "for legislators to look at the issues that schools are facing - in terms of the property tax caps - and address those in the next, upcoming legislative sessions."

Orlowski says they could also follow in the footsteps of other schools districts. That option would be going to the voters for a referendum.
