New fire training center in South Bend nearly complete

A brand new fire training center is nearly finished in South Bend.  The $5.4 million facility will be on five acres of land on Sample Street.

The cold temps and endless snow this winter has led to some delays, so the center isn't ready for training yet.  That didn't stop the city from dedicating the site to its namesake, former South Bend Fire Chief Luther J. Taylor Sr.

Taylor, who served as chief for 21 years, was on hand with the mayor for the ceremony.

The department has never had a training space.  Current Chief, Stephen Cox says crews are used to traveling to other areas to train so this will be a welcome change.

"It's so important for us to be able to have a training center that's local to us, within our jurisdiction, so that way if there is some sort of a fire event or emergency, we can respond even though our crews are actively training," explained Cox.

The center is expected to be up and running by the end of April.  It includes a classroom, a running track, and a training tower.
