Former Central WR Palmer learning business side of NFL

"You know [the NFL] is very much so a business," said Nathan Palmer.

When former Elkhart Central star wide receiver Nathan Palmer felt severe pain in his knee during a Colts Preseason game, he thought his NFL career was over.

"It wasn't just necessarily the fact that I didn't think I could play," said Palmer. "I knew I could play. It was more of just I'm an undrafted guy and somebody might step in and there's no need for me again."

Two days after he learned his knee was sprained, he was released.

Thankfully his career was not over.

Within a few weeks Palmer made his way onto the Miami Dolphins practice squad.

Unfortunately that stage of his career was also short lived, a few days later Palmer signed with the Denver Broncos. It was a dream come true for him because its the same team his childhood idol Peyton Manning plays for.

"When he walked in it was like that slow motion glow," said Palmer. "He just had the glow and it was like man there's Peyton. He walked over and was like 'How you doing Nate?' And I was just like 'He knows my name, this is crazy!'"

Not only was he on the same team as Manning, but he was around for the Broncos run to the Super Bowl.

"There was a little joke among the receivers like it must be good to be Nate Palmer right now. Might get a ring and all you have to do is just show up and practice for four weeks," said Palmer while laughing.

Palmer got to be on the sidelines for Super Bowl XLVIII. It was an exciting time that quickly turned somber as the Seahawks blew out the Broncos.

"Not playing in the game, it probably didn't hit me as hard as those playing in the game," said Palmer. "But I will say I sat on my chair in the locker room and cried like a baby. Not just for me but for guys like Champ Bailey and Peyton."

Palmer's now in his second off-season as a pro. He plans to work hard to get himself a more prominent role next year because he never wants to deal with the feeling of getting cut ever again.

"I'm not ready to give it up," said Palmer. "I'm definitely going to play for as long as I can and for as long as the NFL will have me."

Palmer signed a future's contract with the Denver Broncos recently. The contract guarantees Palmer a spot on the active roster with the team through at least training camp.
