Chili cook-off at Sanctuary at St. Paul

With the weather dropping and snow making its way back to our area, a hot meal sounds like a good idea. A bowl of chili is ideal, and that is what residents at the St. Paul Retirement Community and community members got to enjoy, and judge, on Thursday. Sanctuary at St. Paul's hosted its annual Chili Cook Off in honor of National Chili Day. St. Paul chefs put out the challenge, and five other restaurants took it on. They included Texas Roadhouse, Martin Supermarkets, Javier's Bistro, Dickies at Swan Lake Resort and CJ's pub.

St. Paul's chef Brett Boomhower won the People's Choice Award. This was voted on by the people in attendance. "I chose to go with some bold flavors and some dehydrated fruits and things of that nature to make a sweet, smoky chili instead of something like a five alarm chili."

Dickie's at Swan Lake Resort won the Chef's Choice. Chef Boomhower made this selection from the five competitors going up against him. "When your fellow colleagues and competitors recognize you for the chili that you've done that's wonderful."

And Javier's Bistro won the Firehouse Award. He was chosen by South Bend Fire Chief Steven Cox and members of his crew. "They must have liked the difference of the pork and the ground beef together and the smokiness. You know smokiness-firehouse."

This was the fifth year of the event. This was the first year Dickie's and Javier's Bistro competed. Both said they will take on the challenge again next year.
