Worst of flu season appears to be over

There are plenty of coughs and sniffles still going around Michiana, but doctors say the worst of it appears to be over.

They're reporting a rougher-than-normal flu season, especially among 21 to 64-year-olds.

Nationwide, 60% of patients admitted to the hospital with influenza were from that age group, and that's unusual, according to Saint Joseph County Health Officer Doctor Thomas Felger.

"One of the things it does - particularly in young people - is attack the lung tissue as opposed to just making you flu sick," says Felger.

There's still time to fight back. The Saint Joseph County Health Department is offering free flu shots at its South Bend and Mishawaka clinics. You don't need an appointment. They'll be available as long as supplies last.
