Proposed changes will affect pet owners in South Bend

If you're a pet owner living in South Bend, changes could be on the way.

The Common Council wants to update its animal care and control ordinances. So, a public meeting was held Wednesday for you to weigh in.

Some of the proposals include:

-An emphasis on spaying and neutering.

-Adding universal leash laws.

-Increasing punishments for those who abuse and neglect pets.

"So at the core - this new ordinance - we used the City of Fort Wayne as our model," says South Bend Common Council Member Valerie Schey. "Fort Wayne is well respected throughout the state for having a model animal care and control program. And so - as such - we took their ordinance...the entire chapter...and used that as the foundation for our work."

South Bend's current animal care and control ordinances were enacted back in 1985.
