UPDATE: No life-threatening injuries in multi-car SR-19 accident

Posted:

Roads are back open after a multi-vehicle crash that happened on State Road 19 near County Road 48.  That is just north of Nappanee in Elkhart County.

Police say the crash that involved 12 to 13 vehicles happened just before 2:30pm on Thursday.  Several people were injured, but none of them were life-threatening according to the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department.  Medflight was called, according to dispatch, but cannot fly in current conditions.

Traffic was blocked off at the intersection of CR-46, but roads were reopened around 4:00pm.

We talked to a man whose car was totaled in the accident.  David Cox said when the accident happened you could barely see five feet in front of you.  He said the wind was blowing really bad and everyone driving started slowing down.  Cox said he remembers his car being hit six times, "It just happened so many times, so much whip lash."  His car also spun around several times.  "I think we spun around two or three times, it was nuts," said Cox.

Cox was driving with a friend of his.  Cox's child and his friends child were in the back seat.  Everyone in the car was unharmed.

Cox said when everything stopped he got out of his car.  "All I saw was people up against their windows cause you slam against something you hit your window.  That's the first thing you see.  When I got out the first two vehicles I seen the people weren't moving.  I hurried up, I ran up to their door and they started moving so I felt relief," said Cox.

Cox was driving home to Columbia City so after his car was totaled he, his friend, and their kids had to wait for a ride home.  An Amish family who live right by where the crash happened offered everyone to stay in their home while they waited for their ride.  Cox was very grateful, "For these people not even knowing who we are and they said we could come inside with out kids, you know that's pretty thankful, that's nice of them."
