St. Joseph County veteran surprised with award

Posted:

A veteran thought he was going to work, like any other day, but little did he know that there was a surprise waiting for him.  Homes for Heroes honored Michael Wells as the Hero of the Month for his work in the community. Homes for Heroes is a national program that helps and honors veterans, police officers, and firefighters. Wells served in both the United States Navy and Army.

Wells was given the award for his Flag Awareness Program in which he teaches St. Joseph County children all there is to know about the American flag. He says the flag is a representation of why so many men and women join the armed forces. Wells says that he has never forgotten what he learned from the military and continues to always help when it is needed.

"I took an oath to this country, and I'm serious about it," says Wells, "and I live my life with that creed."

He has spent time at seven schools so far this year, reaching about 300 kids. He plans on visiting another 6 or 7 schools in the coming months. Wells, in addition to his work with the Flag Awareness Program, also is working on a project to help veterans in the area suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
