UPDATE: Woman rescued from burning house died over weekend

The woman police rescued from a burning home on S. Falcon St. in South Bend has died.  The fire broke out around 11:15pm on Thursday, February 27.

Officials say Chester and Esther Borowski were in the house when the basement caught fire. Chester was able get out but Esther was trapped in the home. Police got to the scene first and rescued her. Fire crews arrived shortly afterwards.

Both were taken to the hospital for burns and smoke inhalation. Three police officers were also examined at the hospital for smoke inhalation.  Esther died from smoke inhalation and burns on Friday.

Fire officials announced Tuesday they believe the fire started due to a space heater in the basement.
