Students spend spring break volunteering in South Bend

Posted:

Most college students probably prefer spending their spring break somewhere warm and tropical. Not in the snow in South Bend.

That's just what students from the University of Michigan are doing!

A group of students came to town this weekend to spend time volunteering with the South Bend Unity Gardens. Saturday, they were put right to work, painting bee boxes.

"Even though it's just a week what we're doing here, taking that back to your friends who are going to other places and just getting them to think critically about issues that are going on," says University of Michigan Junior, Alex Scharf.

Another student on the trip, Sophomore Alex Grimm says, "I love the emersion aspect of alternative spring break. We're here within the community learning from them and trying to do as much as we can."

The students are expected to get out working in the garden when it gets a little warmer later in the week.

They'll also spend time learning about the local culture in South Bend.
