Weather doesn't affect Redamak's opening in New Buffalo

Posted:

The spring season is here although it may not look it outside. That means Redamak's has reopened its doors. Redamak's is a seasonal restaurant in New Buffalo, Michigan.  "I think people just wait until open March 1st and they're ready for their first burger so despite the weather we haven't been too bad," Redamak's server Megan Lamb said.

The restaurant was opened Sunday for its second business day of the year. That meant a number of regulars made their way to the restaurant.  "Rain, snow or shine we're going to be at Redamak's opening weekend," customer Rich Covert said.

Rich has gone to Redamak's since he was a little boy. For some, it was their first time eating there. One family from Detroit said they were driving when they saw the restaurant and stopped in. "It was wonderful to escape the dreary, grayness out there and come in here for a nice, hot meal," customer Michelle Bacon said.

Since Redamak's opens on March 1st every spring it, has become a symbol that the winter season is over. "I've waited on several people yesterday and today that say 'aren't we suppose to be looking out the window and seeing sunshine?'" Lamb said. "I've had friends say 'Why is there snow? This is supposed to be spring. Redamak's isn't open in the winter,'" Daniel said.

While Redamak's may have customers coming through their doors, Katie Daniel does not think other places may be so lucky. "I definitely think that restaurant owners are ready to be done with winter," Daniel said. "Thankfully we haven't had quite an impact as some other restaurants have."

Redamak's underwent some changes from their previous year including adding new drinks to the menu. That may just add to the already high number of customers the restaurant has had. Snow and ice may still cover the rods but people are making their way over, regardless. Rich Covert summed up the challenge: "Spring is a little not on time, but Redamak's is right on time," he said.

Redamak's closes on October 19th. This is the 39th year the restaurant has been in business.
