ND QB Golson goes back to practice

When Everett Golson walked out of the Notre Dame locker room Monday morning wearing his #5 red practice jersey, he could not believe how good it felt.

"I want to say surreal in a sense," said Golson. "I felt accomplished for a split moment. That I went through what I went through and I'm moving forward now. Still continuing that process of trying to grind and be better."

Golson was suspended last season to an academic violation and rejoined the team in practice for the first time Monday for the start of spring football.  "It feels good to be back out there with these guys," said Golson.

After practice wrapped up, Golson also spoke to the media for the first time since returning to campus in January.

"My maturity level is completely different now," said Golson. "I had some time to really sit back and think on what I did and how I can move forward from that. I think I'm a different person because of it."

Golson took first team reps with the Irish during their first spring football practice. While he hopes to be the starting quarterback for Notre Dame in the fall, he knows its not guaranteed.

"I have to win the job," said Golson. "Nothing is given to you."

Notre Dame head coach said he expects sophomore quarterback Malik Zaire to compete for the starting job. However, he did add he really likes what he's seen from Golson so far, given the pressure he's facing.

"We all live in the same world when it comes to the Notre Dame quarterback," said Kelly. "We're going to heap a lot on this kid's shoulders and he knows that and that's why he came back to Notre Dame because he wants that opportunity. Clearly, he's going to be the guy that drives this force."

Fans will get their first chance to watch Golson play again when Notre Dame plays their annual Blue/Gold scrimmage on April 12th at Notre Dame Stadium.
