One dead, one injured after semi-truck collides with passenger vehicle


One person is dead and another remains hospitalized after a Monday night accident in Niles Township.

According to Michigan State Police, a passenger vehicle driven by a 21-year-old from Galien and with a 27-year-old passenger from Buchanan was struck by a semi-truck shortly after 6:45pm. The passenger vehicle was stopped in the westbound lane at the intersection at 3rd St. on US-12 when the truck collided with it.

Both occupants of the passenger vehicle were stabilized at an area hospital, before being transported to a South Bend hospital. The 21-year-old driver was declared dead at the South Bend hospital while the 27-year-old is reported to be stable. The semi-truck driver from Minnesota did not suffer any injuries.

The accident remains under investigation and names of the parties involved are being withheld until the families can be notified.
