Trucks and other heavy vehicles won't be driving on many County Roads in St. Joseph County for a while.  The County Engineer has issued a seasonal weight limit declaration starting March 10 until further notice.

What that means is vehicles weighing more than 8 tons won't be allowed on some roads (see list below).  County Engineer Jessica Clark said in a written release that because of the harsh winter season, the spring thaw will be especially straining on roads.

School buses, public transit vehicles, emergency responders, county municipal vehicles and garbage trucks are exempted from the order, so residents don't have to worry about delays for those services.

The following roads are affected by the order:

  • Adams Road between Ironwood Road and SR-23
  • Anderson Road between Bittersweet Road and Ash Road
  • Apple Road between Harrison Road and the Osceola limits
  • Brick Road between Havel road and SR-23
  • Currant Road between Jefferson Road and Day Road
  • Darden Road between Snowberry Road and Primrose Road
  • Douglas Road between Ironwood Road and SR-23
  • Elm Road between Pierce Road and Jackson Road
  • Hamilton Trail between Chicago Trail and Michigan state line
  • Ireland Trail between Ireland Road and Dragoon Trail
  • Ironwood Road between Cleveland Road and State Line Road
  • Jefferson Road between Bittersweet Road and Ash Road
  • Mayflower Road between Sumption Trail and SR-23
  • New Road between US-31 and Ash Road & between LaPorte Co. Line and SR-23
  • Oak Road between Roosevelt Road and Marshall County line
  • Osborne Road between LaPorte County line and SR-23
  • Redwood Road between SR-4 and SR-23
  • Smilax Road between SR-23 and SR-4
  • Snowberry Road between US-20 and Chicago Trail
  • Sumption Trail between Roosevelt Road and Mayflower Road
  • Timothy Road between Marvel Lane and Michigan state line
  • Walnut Road between SR-23 and SR-4

While the measure went into effect on Mar. 10, not all signs identifying restricted roads had been placed on Monday morning. The St. Joseph County Highway Dept. said over 100 signs need to be placed. Crews had begin installing them over the weekend and will continue until the job is completed.
