Trained spotters keep close watch on Indiana weather

Keeping an eye on that Indiana sky, you have a chance to get in on all the action that mother nature has to offer.

On Tuesday night, the National Weather Service offered a course on Skywarn Spotter Training.

There were some new faces as well as veterans.

Warning Coordination Meteorologist, Michael Lewis wanted to show the group what it takes to be a spotter, what to report to the National Weather Service and why it's important to do.

"We have some trained spotters that just look outside their window and are going to tell us when it's hailing," he says. "We have other people that are actually going out mobile, looking at individual storms as they are moving in and looking at it in a more complex manner."

Lewis says it depends on their level of training and how committed they are.

He adds having trained spotters look for signature signs of rotation and tornadoes can help prevent false alarms from going out to the public.
