Local students trying to end use of hurtful word

Local students are asking people to stop using the "R-word."  They are referring to the word retarded, and they say it's used far too much in a derogatory manner.

Students teamed up with the Special Olympics, setting up tables at Notre Dame and asking folks to sign their name and pledge that they will not use the word in a derogatory manner.

"I've seen the word used from outside sources.  [Special Olympic athletes] have said that it is offensive," said Lucie Gordon, one of the event organizers, "and a lot of people think that 'oh, it's just a word.'  I've seen firsthand that it is hurtful and unnecessary."
