Niles School Board accepts Superintendent's resignation

Posted:

FOX28 has learned the Niles Community Schools Board of Education accepted the resignation of Superintendent Richard Weigel Wednesday night. Weigel had served as Superintendent for four years.

The Board of Education released a statement following a closed session, saying Weigel will stay with the district as a consultant through June 30th.

The statement said, "Under Dr. Weigel's leadership, the District has made progress in several areas. Recently, however, it became apparent that some members of the Administration, the Board of Education and Dr. Weigel have differing views on the leadership and vision for the future of the District."

The statement went on to say that, during Weigel's recent sick leave, he and the Board evaluated options on how to best move forward. Weigel elected to resign.

Dr. Kevin Ivers, who is currently the Superintendent of Intermediate School District, will serve as the interim Superintendent.

FOX28 spoke with custodians and a teacher who said Weigel will be missed. The teacher told us she is sad to see him go, because he pushed them toward excellence.

The announcement came after a series of closed sessions that started rumors about why Weigel wasn't at work. People outside Wednesday's closed session told FOX28 they were hoping to finally learn what was happening behind closed doors.
